Waterbury Improved Detective Camera, 1892

The Waterbury Improved Detective is the largest box camera in the collection. It takes 5 x 7 inch (!!!) exposures on glass plates, and, unlike its predecessor, the Waterbury Detective Camera, it has no provision for plate storage beneath the body.

Like the original Waterbury Detective, this model has removable sliding front and back panels, and a string-set shutter. The shutter, attached to the front panel, is shown in the image at left. The ground glass is visible in the bottom image. One key difference between the Waterburys, old and new, is that on the Improved model the focusing is now accomplished with a knob on the top front of the body, instead of the lever used on the 1888 model.
