U.S. Patent Office, Washington, D.C.
Patent Drawings for the [original] Kodak Camera,
September 4, 1888

The three images on this page are from the Web site of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in Washington D.C. (USPTO).

These are the drawings submitted by George Eastman's attorneys, Church & Church, for his new camera, The Kodak.

The three pages show detailed views of the camera's exterior, and more importantly, the interior with its novel barrel shutter and rollfilm transport designs.

Several pages of text accompany this entry in the USPTO, describing the unique features of the camera and its usage.

The USPTO features a searchable database of early patents - which provide a wealth of information to historians and collectors researching the earliest tools of photography. Although information on early patents is available in image form only, the quality of the data is excellent. Well worth the effort.
