Encore Camera Co., Hollywood, California
Encore! Camera, circa 1940-1955

Sixty years after George Eastman achieved success by having photographers mail their cameras back to Eastman Kodak for reloading and processing, the Encore Camera Company tried its hand at the same deal. The Encore! Camera was a fixed-focus, cardboard box camera with a pull-up wire frame in front, and pivoting sports-type sight in the rear.

Once the film was exposed, the user folded and tucked a $1 bill into a slit on the camera's label, then dropped it in the mail for processing and reloading. (Actually, an entirely new or refurbished camera was sent to the customer as opposed to the actual one submitted for developing.)
