Eastman Kodak
(2) Five-Gallon Earthenware Jugs, 1905-1915

These impressive pieces date to the turn of the 20th-Century. As indicated by the blue "5," their capacity is five gallons of liquid darkroom chemistry. They weigh an enormous amount empty, and one can imagine how heavy and unwieldy they would be when full.

Each jug is nearly 24 inches tall. Differences in overall shape, handle style, glaze color, and label indicate these may have been produced by different manufacturers.

Walker Mangum, Kodak Collector extraordinaire, has one of these jugs in his collection which smells of acetic acid.
