Blair Camera Company,
Improved Hawk-Eye Detective Camera, Leather Covered Variation

Hawk-eye Detective Camera with front closed, ready to shoot

Front door open, showing brass lens and aperture dial

This is a leather-covered variation of Blair's Improved Detective Camera of 1893-1898. The Rapid Rectilinear lens has wheel-set stops and is set behind a three-speed Blair shutter which was built into the front door. Shutter speeds were selected by using a metal tensioning device (the pin-like piece of metal visible at the top of the door), and two different shutter releases handled time versus instantaneous exposures.

The camera takes 4 x 5 inch exposures on glass plates, and is focused via the black-painted brass wheel at top-front-left as one holds the camera.
